Road Tax

From April 2025, road tax is expected to increase for every vehicle. The governments aim is to encourage more lower-emission and electric vehicles on the road. Although the government have decided to tax electric vehicles from the 1st April 2025, this means electric vehicles are no longer expected. Their £0 a year will raise to £10 a year for people buying an EV after April 2025, it is a very minimal increase compared to non electric vehicles which is usually around £180 to £270 a year.

Congestion charges increase

Fast forwarding to December 2025, the rules around congestion charges are set to change.

Currently electric vehicles are exempted to congestion charges, however from December 2025 any vehicle entering London’s congestion charge zones will be required to pay the £15 fee.

Transport of London (TFL) also announced that motorists that currently qualify for discount in zero-emission zones will have to pay the standard fee from the end of this year. This will be an increase from £10 to £15, meaning everyone will now pay the standard fee.

There reasoning for this increase for all vehicles especially electric vehicles was “If every Londoner drives an electric car we won’t tackle congestion, air pollution or the climate crisis” and that it was “always going to be time limited”.

“The best solution to any concerns about unfairness in changes like this is to move to smart, fair road user charging."
