Speed limiters becoming a legal requirement from July.
UK drivers face mandatory speed limiters from 7th July.
All new cars that are launching or have been launched in the EU need to be fitted with an Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) by 7 July 2024 according to the 2019/2044 regulation by the European Commission. This means any existing unregistered cars on forecourts will have to be retrofitted with a speed limiter before they can be sold.
The new ISA technology would limit the vehicle to a maximum of 70 mph as that is the national speed limit. However, they can be ‘turned off’ but re sets every time the vehicle is turned off and on again.
Please note that tampering with these systems (trying to remove them) may nullify a car’s warranty and possibly cause unanticipated electrical problems, which would mean the warranty would be lost.
